Self-Hypnosis and Forgiveness: Can This Combination Work?

Forgiveness, whether you're giving it to yourself or to somebody else, can be the most difficult of all human choices. It often goes against many of our natural instincts and reflexes. As such, it takes more effort to give and gain forgiveness compared to other actions. So how can self-hypnosis be used to achieve forgiveness? And if it can be used, how effective is it?

The nature of forgiveness vs. the practicality of self-hypnosis Self-hypnosis has been used for decades, mainly to achieve relaxation and sometimes as part of psychiatric therapy. It is also often indicated to supplement medical treatment. It has a long history of success (and some reports of failure) and has been used to help people reduce stress, overcome fears and phobias, manage anxiety, even lose weight and stop smoking. Because of this, self-hypnosis has gained a good amount of respect in certain circles. But how can it be used to achieve forgiveness?

Forgiveness is an act that is willingly participated in by an individual. Without the voluntary element of the act, forgiveness just doesn?t work. It is this very nature of forgiveness that most people hope to tap when using self-hypnosis because the technique itself is designed to convince the mind that the act of forgiveness may be achieved.

It would be best to start looking at and treating self-hypnosis as a tool to help a person attain a goal. As a method to attain self improvement, self-hypnosis may help in attaining forgiveness, as long as a person is inclined to accept targeted suggestions.

Self-hypnosis involves several techniques that are often used alone or in combination to achieve a relaxed state where the mind is much more open and willing to accept commands. One of the most common techniques used is one where spoken suggestions are repeated until an individual learns to accept it. This technique may be accompanied by music, visual tools for imagery, muscle relaxation and breathing exercises.

The monotonous utterances and the repetitive use of words, music and imagery are deliberate, meant to induce a sleeplike trance. This state is necessary because it was observed that the more restless and stress the mind and body are, the less likely a person will be accepting.

How effective is self-hypnosis for forgiveness? How people respond to self-hypnosis when used for achieving forgiveness depends on how much they are willing to accept the suggestions. Self-hypnosis will not work if the person is unwilling or prejudiced about the technique, the goal and whatever it represents. Since self-hypnosis is considered as a therapeutic intervention, the results can differ greatly from one individual to the next. There is also no set standard of responses with which to judge its efficacy. Individuals either acknowledge it worked, or they don?t.

How long before desired results are manifested? Again, that depends if the person is willing to allow the technique to work. Self-hypnosis is not something that will work overnight and changes may be expected gradually, but only if the person chooses to make it happen in the first place.

Some experts also suggest that for people who are willing to use self-hypnosis in their quest for forgiveness, the technique has better chances of working if used more frequently. Most cases that can be considered as having used self-hypnosis successfully involved individuals who were able to achieve deeper hypnotic states or prolonged states of relaxation. These individuals have shown better success rates than people who have had unsuccessful self-hypnosis sessions.

Can self-hypnosis be used by everybody? It's not a technique that will have the same effect on everyone and most hypno-therapists recommend that people with a history of psychotic tendencies, paranoia, schizophrenia and other violent psychoses should not use self-hypnosis because of its tendency to magnify certain thoughts and emotions.

Self-hypnosis has more than a mystical and religious significance and is in fact used in many levels of society where religion and spirituality are often not strong influences. However, to achieve forgiveness by way of self improvement, self-hypnosis may be used as a technique, provided a person is willing to be subjected to the influences and suggestions that will be used during hypnosis sessions. Remember that the desired result of self-hypnosis depends greatly on the person's own psyche. Like most self imposed therapies, self-hypnosis will only work if it is allowed to work and the same goes for those who are actively seeking to achieve forgiveness by using this technique.
