Building Your Own Faith-Based Survival Kit For The Workplace - Sweeney Says Let God Be Your Personal Career Coach
Danville, CA (PRWEB) November 28, 2007 -- Aligning your career with the guidance of the "Ultimate Career Coach" will be the topic discussed by Father Michael Sweeney, O.P., president of the Dominican School of Philosophy and Theology, (DSPT) at the December Catholics@Work breakfast speaker series. The event will be held at Crow Canyon Country Club, 711 Silver Lake Drive, Danville, CA 94526 on Tuesday, December 11, 2007. A full buffet breakfast is served starting at 7:00am (Mass is offered at 6:30am at the same location.) Cost is $20 for members and $25 for non-members. "Discerning ones' charisms or gifts and calling can change the lives of anyone," said Father Sweeney, president of the Dominican School of Philosophy and Theology. "But, the process of discovering what your gifts and callings are is not reflective or intuitive. You need to take a step back and assess what you have been given and what you can do with it." Sweeney will discuss how each one of us has charisms, or spiritual gifts, that transcend skills and leverage God's vocational will for us, and will explain the process of how to recognize and appreciate our gifts.
"As we work with one another, understanding each other's unique gifts as well as our own is a key to high performance on teams or as managers," said Tom Loarie, chairman of the Catholics@Work Program Committee and recent attendee at one of Fr. Sweeney's workshops.
In June, 2004 Fr. Sweeney was appointed as the president of the Dominican School of Philosophy and Theology at the Graduate Theological Union, Berkeley, CA. He co-founded the Catherine of Siena Institute in 1997, with the purpose of assisting parishes to provide a formation for lay men and women for the sake of the mission of the Church to the world. To date, more than 25,000 lay Catholics have attended workshops of the Catherine of Siena Institute.
According to Sweeney, every Catholic should excel in the work place as our success is a reflection of God's gifts. He explains that God has given each of us a job to do that will be fruitful according to God's purposes, and he has given us gifts in order that we may accomplish that work. The process of discovering what work we have been given begins with discerning our gifts, because as we have been called, so we have been gifted.
A native of Vancouver, British Columbia, Father Michael Sweeney has been a Dominican since 1973 and an ordained priest since 1979. Sweeney has served as both a pastor and a campus minister. In addition, he conducts retreats for lay people and clergy and is a university instructor in the Theology of the Laity at DSPT.
