Does Viral Marketing Really Work?

If you have done any type of research into marketing your online business then I am sure you have seen this many times. 7 little words that fill your heart with hope. The sites claim, "Viral marketing will have thousands of people on your list by the end of the week!" But does it really work?

For those of you that do not know what viral marketing is, I will give you a brief overview as how I see it to be. Viral marketing is a form of marketing that, in essence, travels from one person to another to another and so on. Word of mouth, for example, is a form of viral marketing. Online viral marketing takes the form of e-mails, advertisments, banners, etc. that are sent to others in hopes they will in fact send it to the people they know or are in contact with.

Based on this thought then YES viral marketing would be an extremely effective way to drive traffic to your site or product; BUT, online I feel as though viral marketing loses it's purpose and it's power. Why? I'll tell you.

Let's say you just started as an affiliate for a company online, you are so excited to start driving the traffic to your page and build a huge income! You search the internet high and low for ways to promote your pages. After a few hours of reading and testing out some options you realize the only way you are going to get your business headed in the right direction is to have a TARGETED list of interested people. Seems simple enough, you've read about how viral marketing sites can build your list for you within days. PERFECT! Or is it?

The idea of building a huge list of leads quickly is inticing to anyone, but when you look deeper into how the viral marketing sites build your list, the leads are generally useless. When you join a viral site you have to submit some information first, then you can submit your ads to the other members on the site. Within days you will have new leads for you to send your campaign to. This is exciting! Your business is going to explode with profits! But alas no responses. Like I said earlier, the leads are generally useless and I will tell you why. Your list is built up of e-mail addresses of the people from the viral site. You have been building a list of people who are there for the same reason as you are. To build a list!

The leads they generate are not TARGETED leads. You now have thousands of people on your list that are trying to build a list of their own. Chances are high that they will not read your e-mails, they already have a business they are trying to promote.

Now I am not going to tell you NOT to use viral marketing techniques for your business. They can be effective if done properly. Some of the people on your list may be swayed by your e-mail and decide to join you in your quest for online income. Just be cautious in how much time you really want to waste.

There is no such thing as bad publicity, especially when it's free, but don't expect miracles to happen from your viral market list. If there is a good reason to join a viral market site, it is to have your ad linked to everyone elses sites. The more link backs you have to your page, the higher ranked you will be in the search engines! But that is a topic for another day.

So remember, viral leads will generally be useless to you but free publicity never hurt anyone. Don't expect any miracles.
