The Refinishing Touch works With US Army To Improve Soldiers' Living Conditions

Alpharetta, GA (PRWEB) May 12, 2008 -- GSA-Approved vendor The Refinishing Touch has played a key role in the US Army's Barracks Modernization Program since 1994. When Ed Frawley posted his video about the living conditions faced by his son's company at Fort Bragg in mid-April on YouTube, it was a call to action for anyone who viewed it. "This is embarrassing, it's disgusting and it makes me mad as hell." Frawley states in the voiceover showing photographs of peeling paint, pipes leaking sewer gases, and a bathroom floor flooded from overflowing toilets. The Korean-war era barracks needed immediate attention.

However, Frawley does not once mention the condition of the furniture in his YouTube message. Some of the barracks renovations had indeed already been underway before the 82nd Airborne had returned to the North Carolina base a month earlier than anticipated. This included the VOC-free, non-toxic onsite refinishing of their furniture.

In a letter from General John M. Keane, US Army Vice Chief of Staff dated August of 2001, he notes that "Maintenance and repair of furniture are challenges for the Army given the available resources and the fact that furnishings must compete with other installation programs for these funds." Furniture refinished by The Refinishing Touch looks as good as new at a fraction of the cost of purchasing new furniture.

Keane states, "The Army is always interested in new ideas and programs that will ultimately save dollars while enhancing the living conditions of our soldiers." To purchase new furniture for the same rooms, the CO2 impact would be over 100 times the amount at an estimated 134.1 tons. Refinishing the barracks furniture saved trees from destruction, and saved useful pieces from going to the landfill.
