Why work for yourself? Maybe you're tired of that long, endless commute each morning. Maybe your boss has started micromanaging your bathroom breaks. Maybe you just want to set your own schedule. Maybe you cannot find a job that fits your ideal career choice. All these things are some great reasons to consider the question "Why work for yourself?", but is it enough?

Probably not. There are many reasons why work for yourself, but there are also some important misconceptions about why work for yourself. First, there are a large number of mental obstacles to overcome when you consider the question "Why work for yourself?" realistically. For instance, you need to get out of the idea that you have legal protection when you are on the job. When you think about "Why work for yourself?", you should also know that you are now the boss. There is no one else to make those big decisions for you. No more safety net is a big issue when you consider the question "Why work for yourself?".

"Why work for yourself?" is also a big question when considering your schedule. Many people think that setting your own schedule is easy, so answering the "Why work for yourself" question is simple - it is not. If you are not careful, then you may find yourself never being able to get away from your work. It becomes all consuming. "Why work for yourself?" now becomes "I work for work." If you have a family or friends, this situation may alienate you from all of them.

If you are able to balance work and free time, realize your responsiblity toward your business, and are willing to be the boss of you, then why work for yourself is probably in your best interest. Yet if your answer to "Why work for yourself?" is just to avoid the traffic jam on I-40 every morning, you ought to do a little more soul searching as to whether working for yourself is a good idea.
